Giving, Caring and Sharing

In the weeks I have been volunteering my time with the ill and with hospice I have come to realize the true reason for my being at the center always makes itself known. Yesterday it was Dorothy, a tender 83-year-old woman who had just received some disturbing news.

As it was, yesterday I was feeling a little behind in my workload and thought maybe this week I will pass. When the time to go came near I could hear my spirit say ”time to go!” and I could feel the response of my Will supporting that. My total being agreed and in that moment it was an effortless movement to leave my work and make my way to the Convenant Center.people sharing

I always walk the halls slow and ask the patients if they want to hear a song before I enter anyone’s room. Yesterday a nurse came up to me and said, “I know someone who needs some cheering up will you go there?” I said, “Yes of course what room?” That is when I met Dorothy. I asked if she would like a song and she said yes. I asked how she was and she said “not so good.” I asked if she wanted to talk and she shook her head no saying, “it won’t change anything” and cried a little.

I began to play a song I wrote called ”Angel” in hopes of soothing her worries. A little smile came to her face. When I finished she poured out her story. I sat on the floor with my hand on her knee and listened. The outside world with my “things to do” faded and all that mattered was this time here and now with this sweet old woman. I discovered her deep need and desire to go home. I felt an inspiration to share the idea of miracles and hope and sang her a song called, ”Take Me Home”.

I would like to mention that just before I left home I was inspired to refresh my memory of titles from my songbook. “Take Me Home” leaped from the title list.  I mention this because it is all a part of how we are inspired and guided in all things large and small when we are open.  Now here I was sitting on the floor singing Dorothy this song.

Life can be challenging and chaotic but there is something about giving or being of service for the sake of it that brings a deeper sense of connectivity to life. We are all in this together, young and old, friends and strangers. The time has come to love the self enough so we find our self connected to the endless flow of love springing forth from Mother/Father/God. We don’t need to wait until our cup overflows, we can begin today. To give for the sake of giving is Divine. It can be as simple as a smile to a cashier or a phone call to your mother. It is in the simple acts of giving and caring that we find ourselves gravitating to the natural flow of love as it was intended.

Dorothy thanked me and was surprised when I thanked her for sharing. She bravely shared her deepest feelings with me and it was truly an honor. Before yesterday I didn’t know Dorothy existed but today I know she does and I hold her in my heart. God bless you Dorothy and may miracles find you open and willing to receive them.

Importance of Breath

Breath and Life:

Breathing affects every system of our bodies and also has a general effect on our memories, our energy levels, and our concentration.  The breath oxygenates the body, revitalizing organs, cells and tissues.  Everything we do, from the feelings we have to the choices we make, are influenced by the breath. Yet little consideration is given to this autonomic function that affects virtually every part of the body and our life.

The majority of people breathe incorrectly. Instead of breathing deeply, bringing the air down to the bottom of the lungs, where the richest blood supply is, the breath is very shallow, bringing air into the uppermost part of the lungs only.

A good way to experience this is to place your hand on your abdomen, take a deep breath in and feel the movement. That’s why this type of breathing is sometimes referred to as “belly breathing.” If  you are not accustomed to relaxing your belly, you may find first attempts to breathe in this way  confusing and seemingly unnatural. With perseverance, it will become natural.

Begin to be aware of your breath and notice if you are using your diaphragm or just bringing the breath into the uppermost part of your lungs. Where is the most movement, in the abdomen or in the chest? Practice bringing the breath down deep into the lungs, feeling the abdomen expand as the diaphragm moves downward. Take a few “breath breaks” during the day and practice some deep breathing.

Complete Breath

This breath maximizes the use of the lungs, increases the oxygen level in the body and calms the mind.

  • Sit up tall, in a comfortable position.
  • Inhale, expanding the abdomen, opening the ribs and lifting the shoulders.
  • Exhale, contracting the abdomen, relaxing the ribs, and lowering the shoulders.

Repeat

Lengthening The Exhale

This breath increases lung capacity and activates a relaxation response in the body. It is a great breath to lower the stress level quickly.

  • Inhale gently and naturally while counting. (Make the count as long as is comfortable for you).
  • Exhale slowly, taking twice as long to empty the lungs.
  • Repeat. As the inhale lengthens, lengthen the exhale.
  • A simple way to start is to inhale for 5 counts and exhale for 8 counts

Four Parted Breath

This breath can be done using different counts, depending on the lung capacity. It develops the lungs and also activates relaxation in the mind and the body. It’s good for lowering the stress level in the body.

  • Inhale to a count of 5.
  • Retain the breath for a count of 5.
  • Exhale for a count of 5.
  • Hold the breath out for a count of 5.
  • Repeat.

Breathing properly:

  • Fuels energy production
  • Improves focus and concentration
  • Eliminates toxins
  • Strengthens the immune system
  • Improves bowel function
  • Reduces stress, tension and anxiety
  • Increases feelings of calmness and relaxation
  • Can lower blood pressure
  • Increases metabolism, aiding in digestion and weight loss.

Improper breathing

  • Mental fog
  • Dizziness
  • Numbness
  • Anxiety
  • Chest pain
  • Digestive problems
  • Irritable bowel
  • Neck and shoulder pain

Journal Writing

Writing in a journal is a wonderful tool on the road to self-discovery. The transformation of energy through the creative art of writing your thoughts and feelings brings light to many confusing and highly emotionally charged situations.

It is also a wonderful place to write about all the things you are grateful for. Gratitude lifts our spirit and our thoughts. It gives us the opportunity to see the brighter side of life. That in itself is a gateway to living life on the bright side.

This video will provide you some good tips on how to get started and some good reasons why journal writing would be a great and fun addition to your every day life. Enjoy the road to discovering more about who you truly are. Peace be with you *

Laughter Good for the Soul

Laughter is contagious. When you hear it it strikes a chord within that brings a smile to ones face. Deep belly laughs can be so strong as to make even the most distracted grumpster feel the well of joy within their very being.

If you are in the dull drums and need a lift listen to some unabashed innocent laughter.

This video contains one minute of laughter. The pure and untamed joy of mother and son. It has come to the attention of those in the medical profession that laughter is good medicine but even without all the studies to prove it I think we have always known that laughter is good for the soul.

In Search of My True Voice

It seems there is something or someone that comes along and strikes us in such a way as to motivate us to wake up and dive in. Such motivation for me was finding love and my true voice. My heart and my voice had been buried beneath life’s experiences that were too overwhelming to feel at the time, yet whispered from some deep dark corner of my being. A faint glow of a near dead ember tugged at my heart one last time then suddenly I dove in. Renewed with great desire to feel my heart and hear my true voice before it became lost to me forever, I began the process of physically, mentally and emotionally unraveling and breaking down everything that stood in the way of the true expression of myself  and the love within that longed to be free.

The journey led me through passages of every conceivable denial, judgment, hate, fear, and pain that I had unconsciously carried for way too long. I had no idea how much trapped energy was waiting for my attention, waiting to be liberated. I didn’t expect this level of power to wash me under, wash me over and wash me through breaking me down and shattering everything I knew my world to be.

Blind yet willing, I looked within and prayed unceasingly for guidance. Sometimes I followed my guidance and other times I didn’t, couldn’t or wouldn’t for reasons I did not yet understand. Each time I followed my guidance the results were in favor of my highest good, my growth and my true desire to hear the truth, to know myself, to reconnect with Source once again.

Songs came to me and through me.  Open to receive them, the vibration healed and transformed my thoughts, opened my heart, released my voice and freed my Will. Perseverance brought me home to my heart.

As clarity follows chaos I discovered Mother/Father/God had never stopped loving me. I stopped loving myself. They had never left me; I was blind to Their presence. When I returned home to my own heart Mother/Father/God who now has ultimate room within my heart to live, expand and express love through me was there waiting patiently.

Is there something calling for your attention? Is there something tugging at your heart wanting to express through you? Is there a desire to open and explore the deeper parts of your self?  Do you fear it will shake up your world and change things in ways you can’t see? This is your life. Change will come as it always does. Some of what lies hidden within are gifts and talents undeveloped. Allow creative energy to move through you. Be who you are, all of who you truly are not just small parts that are safe just making it through each day. Embrace the change. Listen to your true inner voice that guides you perfectly out of the darkness and into the light of your authentic Self. From where I stand, I can say, there is no greater achievement in life than to be the love that beats in your honest open heart and to feel the fullness of love a true connection with the Divine brings. The path of unconditional love and unconditional acceptance of all that you are will take you there. There is no better time to begin and no better place to start then where you are right now. Where it takes you is anyone’s guess. The good news is the truth sets you free so spread your wings and get ready to fly.
